Here at Riverford we’ve been cooking the school dinners for a local primary school since 2005, but last year we thought it would be fun to give the kids a patch of land on the farm to grow their own vegetables to put in the meals.
The results were a huge success. The children grew onions, potatoes, tomatoes and many other crops that they had chosen themselves. All the year groups got involved.
We recently had a little harvest festival so the children could show their parents what they had been up to - and you can see the results here!

What a great idea. I remember, at my school we dabbled with growing cress on blotting paper but I am a real believer in teaching sustainability in schools.
Where possible, all schools should have their own vegetable and flower borders.
Keep it up!

It iso nice to see children getting a real opportunity to grow vegetables so that they have a concept of where are food comes from. A friend of mine teaches in Alton, Hampshire and a children’s garden that Alton Infants created won a Gold and best small garden at show at Hampton Court recently. Maybe our children will see what it like for our grandparents….when they all used to grow their own produce at home.
Well done Riverford….I only wish we lived closer so that my two little rug rats could have the smae opportunities!
