Last weekend we sponsored the Taste the World stage at WOMAD. After performing on the main stages, artists from all corners of the globe cooked their favourite dishes in our tent while playing the occasional song and discussing the relationship of food, family and music before sharing their meal with the audience.

I am not good in crowds so it was with some trepidation that I took the family to my first festival in twenty years. Part of the deal was that we provide the veg and do our own cookery demonstrations, only without the songs. This was made even more scary after witnessing the charm and style of a guitar-playing Louisianna beauty cooking gumbo. For the most part I reckon I was a better cook (most of the North African performers conceded that it was the women in their lives who did most of the cooking), but it is hard to compete with someone who can sing, speak eight languages and play a range of instruments, most of which I had never seen before. It was a fantastic weekend and reaffirmed my conviction that real food, prepared with love from wholesome ingredients, has a cultural significance to be embraced.
    Guy Watson
